Cory cats with frontosa?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's why I wanted the Cory's for the schooling and clean up. In the end I want 10 fronts, one common pleco, and say 6 catfish a little over stocked for 220 gallons but I think it will look nice I'll see if my lfs sell petricola this week hope to have my 220 plumbed Thursday and water in it Friday

Most LFS sell Lucipinnis as Petrocola, basically the same but the Lucipinnis stays a little smaller. The only true Petrocola are usually wild caught and haven't been know to breed in an aquarium. I have settled on 8 Fronts in my 180 with a group of Jumbo Cyprochromis, a Syno Eupterus and a Galaxy Pleco. I already know the comments are coming, yes I know Fronts eat Cyps in the wild and can and will eat them in a tank. Jumbo cyps are a little more aggressive and my Fronts look at them as tank mates, I also know it could change.

I'm just wondering because the lfs has syno catfish but that's all they are labeled as I didn't ask if they knew what kind as this was about a year ago I'll have to go back and see if they know what species

Best choice in my opinion is the lucipinnis. They're easier to get than petricola. I know of ony 2 people that have "true" petricola. I'm sure there are many more, but in my fish circle, only 2. Just be mindful as to what synos you go with, as some get rather large. I have 13 tanks set up currently, and all but 3 have synos in them. My pleco breeder tanks.

+1 to the lucipinnis. Watch aquabid for the good deals. I recently got 15 one inch lucies for $50 and that included shipping. Generally they run about $5 each at that size.

With corys it's not just size, there are smallish fish you can often keep with fronts, but cory behavior itself is likely to get them picked off as snacks, besides the water differences. Don't know about petricola if you're wanting your fronts to breed... most people find out they're good at stealing/eating eggs from fronts. Have you considered Gnathochromis? Pretty much a Tanganyikan version of a geophagus.

But, what a lot of people don't realize is fronts will spend some time sifting sand, especially when they're hungry. In the wild, they're not the exclusive piscavores some people think, but will also eat shellfish, crustaceans, etc. and you can see this in their behavior when they scoop mouthfuls of sand looking for food. In any case, if you feed them properly, don't overfeed, there's not much need for a clean-up crew, other than if you want to add the variety of fish to the tank.
