Cost of breeding feeders vs buying

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe it is cost effective in the out short run to buy your feeder but if you fish are not the type to be able to accept anything else besides feeders, breeding your own would be better. You can control from day one what the feeders eat and how healthy they are before you feed them to your fish.

keep in mind the time the fry grow rate. it might take a few months before they are good size to feed to your monsters. if you are breeding your own feeder, you might need to go big to make it worth your while otherwise, just buy the feeders, qt them, then feed.

I agree that it is far cheaper to buy them unless you get to near commercial populations, if you are running plant troughs as pond filters than you can breed plain guppies or mollies as an extra without adding much expense, you will get at least enough for the occasional meal

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I've bred in the past, it's a fair bit of work, and unless on a large scale, pretty much amounts to a nice snack for the predators. I was curious as I'm in the process of setting up an Acestro tank and will need a constant supply.
Sounds like maybe I'll start a small breeding program now so it's fully functional in a few months in the mean time, set up a quarantine tank for the bought ones.

If you really want a constant supply I would get a nice pond and put about 1000 guppies in there and give em a couple weeks before you even start taking any out for food. You will never run out of food this way. And you would have to add plants and stuff for the babies to hide in.

At my lfs i can get live bearers for 15.00/100 100/14.00 for red minows 100/15 for small gold fish and 16/100 of large gold fish. Kinda makes it hard to breed your own with the exception of maybe the 1000 guppy idea.

IMO the only benefit to breeding your own feeders is to control the quality of food your fish will eat.
