Alright everybody, I know we have some pretty smart people here, and I'm hoping you can do the math for me. I'd like to know approximately how much running my tank is costing a month. I'm running a 300 watt heater, canister filter, 500 aquaclear, and a penguin 330.

My dad seems to be convinced that due to this tank running, we're gonna be out on the streets in no time. Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but yeah, you get the point.

And how much more would it cost to add a 180? :D

What is your rate per kw/hour

How often is your heater actually on, and what kind of canister?

Well in my area my power bill in the summer is $60 with a 150, 135, 2x 55, 26, 20, 2x 10, and a 5.5. During the winter $200-$250. The tanks are not the majority of the cost.

Truth be told, fish tanks dont cost to much to operate.

Please...qualify broad statements such as this or simply keep guesses to yourself.

The average electric utility rates in Florida are $0.08/kWh. California rates fluctuate from a base rate of 0.12/kWh to peak usage rates as high as $0.38/kWh. It can cost up to 5 times more to run an aquarium in CA as it does in FL.

Every State/City utilities company have different rates for electricity, gas, water.

You need to find out your rates in your area, calculate the amount of time the lights are on, heater (if used), consumption of your pumps/filters. If you pay for water/sewage services calculate how much w/c you do a month.

Once you have these numbes you can pretty much get a good estimate on how much its costing you monthly.

Easiest thing to do is look at your monthly untility bill it should have the breakdown of how much per cubic feet of water, Kwh and your gas usage if you are using natural gas for hot water that is.

Now if you live in an apartment that all utilities included...hell crank everything on then. :naughty:
