Cost of using certain items?

Try this and don't forget to enter your correct kilowatt hour charge. A quick google search or your bill will show this.

For example NPPD is .0851 in the Summer for first 750 kwhs then .0698 after that.
.0626 in the Winter for the first 750 kwhs then .0374 after that.

My future 300 gallon 24 hour usage: (estimated)
2 x 300w heaters (gussing they will run half the time?) = 300 watts
4 x 48" 32w T-8 lights (8 hours a day/ divide by 3) = 43 watts
36w UV Sterilizer = 36 watts
Mag Drive 3600 = 380 watts
Mag Drive 2400 = 265 watts

Total = 1024 watts

Summer = $57.00 per month
Winter = $37.00 per month

They actually make a thing that you can plug your tank into and it will tell you how much power it consumes.

Those actually work amazingly well and are very accurate.
The folks in one of my other hobbies have used and reviewed this item..it works!

My other hobby?
2.7 killawatts peak of Holiday Cheer, over 8000 lights, 32 channels, computer controlled and syncronized to music transmitted over a low power FM transmitter :headbang2

Yep...I am one of "those" people LOL!

Truth be told, fish tanks dont cost to much to operate.

Just milk money!

I was always wondering too. thanks bud8fan for the calculator. I did not know it was as bad as the calculator suggests. maybe I should rethink the 10,000 gallon tank! J/K

What what sort of lighting are you using? Number of bulbs, bulb rating, and hours ON per day?

Uhhh, just a fluorescent bulb as far as lighting goes. It stays on for about 10+ hours a day. I don't really have a set schedule for it.

Please...qualify broad statements such as this or simply keep guesses to yourself.

The average electric utility rates in Florida are $0.08/kWh. California rates fluctuate from a base rate of 0.12/kWh to peak usage rates as high as $0.38/kWh. It can cost up to 5 times more to run an aquarium in CA as it does in FL.

I'm pretty sure it's around $.10/kwh here in Rhode Island right now.

What is your rate per kw/hour

How often is your heater actually on, and what kind of canister?

heater is on pretty much 24/7. Small canister. Two other filters. I want to build my own wet/dry with a small pump and build the heater into it for the other tank.

Welcome,

Summer must be very boring for you...;-)

Thanks for the Welcome Dr. Joe! :)

Although it isn't a full time thing I do alot of work towards it during the summer... it takes an average of 20 to 50 hours of computer time to sequence a 3 minute song...:WHOA:
Plus the planning and construction of all the "harnesses" 75 plus extension cords etc.
I could be doing worse things...LOL!

Sorry for thread hijacking.....;)

Are you looking for someone to do the estimate for you Benfica540 ?
