thanks

I don't own a store, but before looking at expenses I would look at customers in your area. Do a survey or something of the likes to check out wether or not you could build a sustainable customer base to cover the expenses. Ask potential customers to your "to be" store what they want to see, what they want to buy and what they are willing to spend. How many people in the area you are in are actually looking for a more specialized lfs? Without customers willing to go to your store and spend their hard earned cash, the question of expenses become moot...
Keep in mind the bad economy, the costs of running a store; as in rent/mortgage on the property, electricity costs for the tanks, water costs for the tanks ( I don't know how it works in the USA, but in holland we have to pay for the water coming in as well as the water going out!) are you going to supply the fish from your own breeding stock or will you need to find a wholesaler or several different breeders to supply you with the fish? Will you only sell fish or tanks and other necessities as well?
The costs of opening a shop is probably the last thing you should worry about. Figure everything else out first, then IF you have a viable location, business plan and potential costumer base worry about the start up costs. Once you have figured that out you could probably (again, in holland banks have special loans for first time business owners) get a loan from the bank, but make sure you have a great business plan to show them the viability of your store!
I hope this helps a bit in making your idea reality! And good Luck!!

There are a few threads on this subject with lots of different viewpoints, check them out....I thought about trying it myself once or twice but in this area, even the best ones have tanked.

Not sure what its like over in the US, but even over here in HK i know a few LFS owners and all of them have said the same thing, you make money more off equipment than fish for the most part...

Also, fish here are pretty cheap so unless your stocking seriously rare or expensive stock which people are willing to buy, its unlikely you'll survive on just selling fish alone... but this is for HK as i said, not the US..

The Poconos has nothing... haha. I was up there, and there was a little shop called "knockout Aquatics", and it had maybe 10 fish tanks, all slatwater, and it was the size of a large closet.

I say go for it.. I'm looking to start one with in the next few months.. I would say start at home like me at first if you can, then there is no overhead.

Is it me or is less and less people I know of that's owning fish tank those days?

Maybe a little unreleated to start up expense but I heard on the news earlier this week that despite the poor US economy Americans spent more money on their pets last year than any other.

Why don't you just become an online vendor? Brick and mortar stores have too many variables of expenses and circumstances for you to fail, instead use the money to buy x-fish, camera, x-tanks, and see if you can sell from there. Just my opinion.
