Could an electric cat kill ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'll go out on a limb and say at the very least he could stun it, and stress it to death. I have heard of fish becoming very skittish and stressed while housed with them, but then again never kept one myself (on my bucket list lol) so hopefully someone with more exp will chime in. :)

Techinally speaking yes. The correct shock during the cardiac repolarization stage of the ventricles (t-wave) could put the fishes' heart into vfib. Chances of that happening...probably about .01%

As far as aggression and stress through shock much more plausible and likely.

Right on
Well something happened
The shark was healthy eating and always in the move
I had them together about a year ago with no problems
I had a tank crash and the only guy that made it was the electric so I plopped thin in the 160 with the shark again
1week later black shark dead
Other tank mates that are still kicking
1 15 inch koi
1blood parrot
2 huge Plecos
And 2 African cichlid baby's that managed to get back into tank after the last gutting
It sucks but I guess I can redo the 160
The shark made it hard to stock
He was kinda aggressive

I keep other fish with my e-cat with little issue, but catch22 i have found that she doesnt like alot of movement ex. She is fine with my pleco(about10") and 4 gouramis however she did kill one danio and a sword tail. So i removed danios and no more issues. Hope this helps

i had 1 for a long time the angelicus is the only fish that wont die when sapped . i once touched him when he was just over 10 In he sapped me so bad my arm bounced off the inside of tank and i couldnt use it for 2 hours . i have read reports of them causing heart attacks but very few deaths. he got just over 2'foot before he died was sad day

An 8" electric cat can knock out a full grown human. I'm sure it can kill an 18" fish.

Only because we are on the ground. Yes the fish are in water which conducts electricity well but glass/acrylic and wood do not.

At 4" mine would zap smaller fish and eat them, otherwise my Geophagus never had any issues with him in a 55. Lost him after moving him out of the setup for smaller Tetras, put into a temporary 10-Gallon with a divider and an Abei Puffer on the other side. Some how he managed to jump the divider, and was gone by the morning. :irked: So whatever spark they do produce obviously didn't bother the Puffer!
