Could an electric cat kill ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Only because we are on the ground. Yes the fish are in water which conducts electricity well but glass/acrylic and wood do not.

So are you saying that the Glass/Acrylic and wood insulate and keep it from killing the fish in the tank as its not grounded? If that were the case then how do they use it to hunt with to stun or kill their prey?

In the wild they are grounded and could kill much larger fish/animals. In tanks they can kill small prey to eat because they take less voltage to kill.

I've owned four e cats at all different times currently growing one out. My big one at 8.5 inches shocked me a few times and made my knees buckle to the ground. Idk if he coulda did worse sure he could if I pestered with him. Kept one with tank mates for a bit but you'll know who clashed with them since they usually can't swim normal after. Hope this helps.

My "Plumpy" (6" e-cat) was quite fine with a hundred other fish in her tank but zapped only the excessively boisterous Pimelodus blochii and that only during the feeding time and not to injure but just to drive him away.

All fish sense electricity and magnetic fields. Fish with electrical organs usually have poor-to-zero eye sight and emit and sense electricity for navigation. Very weak signals. Nothing compared to when they have to defend themselves or make a kill.

My e-cat "Link" seems to be existing fine with the school of neon tetras I put in his tank. I just wanted something in there that I could afford to lose/replace. In my opinion that's the way you should approach the idea for a potential tank mate for an e-cat. I mean, you ALWAYS read "never trust a catfish" on this forum. The e-cat deserves even less trust because not only is it a catfish, it's armed with a friggen built-in tazer!

...... despite my rant, I have hand-fed my little catfish since the day I brought him home.

All think the same
the e. cats are chubby
