We have recently inherited a complete 2 ft, 12 gallon tank. I have followed all instructions to keep the temp correct, feeding etc but, being new to tropical fish (I've only kept a couple of goldfish before now!), I haven't got a clue what kind of fish were in the tank that we were given (the previous owner was downsizing her house and simply had no room in the new place). I have been reading up as much as I can and have found out that certain fish cannot live together. Obviously all the fish in the tank at the moment are fine together but, if we added any new fish in the future, I would want to be assured that they will mix with the fish that we have now. I'd really appreciate you taking the time to identify what we have - like I say, we are COMPLETELY new to keeping a tropical tank. Thank you

Generally tropical community fish. You've got some cool Gouramis, at least one neon tetra and a black one (could probably use more), and a synodontis. The brown whiskered catfish is a syno eruptus I think, and that thing might be a little aggressive for your other fish. If he can't catch them, though, it should be fine.

Look for tropical community fish.

What size is the tank? 2 feet sounds larger than 12 gallons but it depends.

a couple types of gouramis (a blue and a gold gourami )
black skirt tetras (fish with black fins)
cardinal or neon tetras (small blue and red fish)
a black line tetra (black line red eye)
a chinese algae eater (one with the sucker mouth)
a synodontis catfish (the one with wiskers)
and a couple of other tetras i cant remember the names of now.

you have a slightly over stocked tank right now (if it is indeed a 12 gallon)and i would not add any more fish i might even consider removing some fish
did you keep the water from the original owners tank?
what kind of filter do you have?
oh and welcome to mfk you will definitely learn alot here.

Thanks so much - I love how you simplified it for me by giving me actual descriptions. Yes, we bagged up the water and kept it - I've been told to do a 10% water change every week from now on. We also fept the filter wet to keep the necessary bacteria. There are 10 fish altogether - do you think that is too much? I wouldn't know how you go about removing them, I wouldn't like any of them to die! I have an Aquael fan-1 plus filter which says it is 230v 50hz 4.7W and this is on 24/7. The heater keeps going on and off but is maintaining a steady 24 to 26 degrees. I hope I'm doing everything right? The only thing I'm not sure of is feeding - some people advise 2 to 3 times a day, some once a day and some every second day! It's very confusing. I'm feeding tropical fish flakes and catfish pellets but someone said they might like shrimp bait (?) sometimes.

Thank you for all your help, guys - it's hard to know when we've only had tropical fish for a week so I appreciate all the help xxx

What am I supposed to do in that instance? Is there a solution? We just inherited them like this so I had no choice in either type or number of fish, I'm just trying to do my best with them now. Any advice on the overstocking is welcome!
