Could anyone help to identify my fish, please? From a complete newbie!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
unfortunatly you are overstocked, i would recommend you take the gouramis and catfish to a petsmart or even better a local speciality aquarium shop and they should take them back and maybe even give you a small store credit. i would get more (3 max) neon or cardinal fish if you want more later on. also be sure to research before you buy to avoid overstocking by accident.

Did most of you miss the part with the '12 gallon tank'? Either take them back or get a bigger tank.

He said he had no choice. He didnt buy it. Hes doing what he can to keep them alive.
But i also have to agree, u do need to get rid of them.

What am I supposed to do in that instance? Is there a solution? We just inherited them like this so I had no choice in either type or number of fish, I'm just trying to do my best with them now. Any advice on the overstocking is welcome!

Give this a look: http://www.aqadvisor.com/AqAdvisor....AqSpeciesWindowSize=short&AqSearchMode=simple

I threw an AqAdvisor build together with (from what I could tell from the pictures) is your stock. I may be off on one or two things but for the most part it should represent your setup... BTW AqAdvisor is a descent tool to use, especially when first getting into the hobby.

I can't tell from the pics what sex all of your Gourami are, if they are all female (as it is clear that at least 1 is) then you should be fine but if you have a male, you could run into trouble in the future. Everyone else in the tank is a choir boy for the most part. Pointed Dorsal fin = Male, rounded Dorsal fin = Female, if you want to try to sex the Gouramis.

I took the liberty of changing your tank size to a 40breeder in my AqAdvisor setup 36X18X16. This is the absolute smallest size tank I would keep for this group, with larger being better, but IMO the 40breeder being better than a 55. Also I went ahead and threw on an extra filter (tetra whisper ex70) but anything with 50+ gallons of filtration should do.

Unfortunately unless you are planning to get rid of some of your stock, the only way to avoid the overstocking issue is to upgrade tanks and add a filter.

Upgrading isn't to hard at this size, pretty much just plug and play, with a filter/substrate/livestock swap. Your also in luck as well because Petco is running a dollar per gallon sale right now, so a 40 breeder would only be $40. As far as the filter, the whisper is just my preference for the setup, as I said any sufficient filter will do; and one that size could be had for around 30 or 40 bucks.

Good luck with the setup and keep us updated. :)
