could i do a ebjd?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh ya i wont be getting him untill the 125 is setup and he and the pictus will be going in the 30 to grow out. and i have allready thought of putting in hides that only the smaller species can enter, or that only some species can enter(i.e. really low entrance for pim cats) and i started a thread asking if i should go peacefull or aggressive cichlids, i guess that will determine if i can keep an ebjd

IF your tank is 75 gal or larger, and you fing an EBJD thats at least an inch larger than your largest fish it will work out OK until a pair bond starts to form between any 2 of the JD's. Get rid of the blood parrot and 1 of your other JD's now, and you should be OK with a 55 gal.

ok, what if i get all females? is their a way to sex ebjd's?
males have a longer top fin.

even if you grow the ebjd out in the 30 by the time it reaches 4 inches the other jd's will be much larger, and from experience ebjd will get beat on by regular jd's no matter what the size they are too peacefully to hang with regular ones. the only way i could keep them is divided or as stated earlier the ebjd is way larger than the others. I have wasted tons of money trying it and it never worked not even in a 180. If you can find a very large ebjd then i would try it,if not i wouldnt waste the time or money.just my experience though.

you will be fine in a 125 with that community, just watch them close and if the EBJD gets bullied then remove the culprit.

I would also suggest UV sterilization. EBJD are very prone to parasites and other ailments, and i have found that UV makes a world of a difference. It will be an investment you will not regret as your whole community will stay disease free, your water will be clearer, and you will not have to resort to copper treatments that will destroy fish nervous system slowly and leave you with vegetable.

I raised and bred this EBJD back to a normal JD in a 135 gallon planted system. It is among the best looking and healthiest specimens i have ever seen on the net. Its downfall was completely my fault, as i was forced to move away (leaving the tank on an aqua medic) for an internship for the summer and its JD mate fought with him so bad he developed a bad secondary infection and was too far gone by the time i got back. Long story short i had to put him out of his misery.

Good luck
