so i go to the lfs today.
just to buy some feeders.
then i spy something in a tank full of fire eels.
could it be?
i thought...
they had like 3 small bichirs in there.
all about 2 inches.
they were lower jaws.
and...
as of now i can only identify them as one of the p. bichir species,or something very close to that.
because they look very much like baby p. bichir bichir.
im going to get one soon and will post a pic to show.
can anyone post some pics of very young p.b.bichir,lap,and sp.koliba?

lets keep hoping until i get them.
i'll be getting 2.
btw, theyre not at the price of small fire eels.
but its only gonna cost 20 US for 2!
btw,
they look exactly like...

sorry no offense, when i was reading your first post, i thought extremely extremely unlikely. And then you said they're $10 each, that basically says they're lapradei if they're P. bichir subspecies.

there's apparently now captive bred lapradei (most likely the Nigerian kind). heres a pic of some 2 inches ones, i think they are indonesian bred.

oops...
i meant 32 US for 2. :D
damn.
yea.
i know the chances that p.bichir bichir were brought in by accident is EXTREMELY slim.
but the two look so alike when young.
p. bichir bichir has like 15 finlets right?
whereas lap has how many?
i will count them in the lfs later.

p. bichir bichir, on average 16.
p. bichir lapradei, typically 13-14, although 15 is not impossible.

on tiny juvies, its sometimes harder to count since the dorsal finlets are still quite connected toward the tail, and its sometimes hard to say where the tail fin begins.

anyway, bichir bichir can't really be brought in by accident because 1) for the japan ones, their exporters certainly would not export them by accident, and 2) for wild caught, theres pretty much no bichir supplier where they're for sure to be found, so no accident export either, which is partly why they're still not available outside of japan.
