Could this be a new osphronemus species!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so is this normal then? mine around 5" it feed like quite CRAZY now.. it even strip plants.. and the fin is starting to show light red, the body is grey but its still doesnt show the dark spot.. Is this how a normal RTGG turns out? or something different?

as for my other smaller RTGG (Id think), no dark spot but the fins have a slight pinkish color, gonna relocate him first thing in the morning, (hope my newly saved 8" oscar doesnt kill him first) :nilly:

Anyway, how big a RTGG suppose to be to have show color red fins?

er... this is an old post... in my opinion, RTGG shows their redness around its fin even in its juvenile form... as it grows bigger, the redness becomes more intense and spreads around its fin... not only on the end of the fin, but if you are lucky, the whole fin will turn red... As for giant gourami species, there are 4 different kind known... the so-called-abino, RTGG, Exodon (giant gourami with teeth), Giant gourami (all the black giant gourami including the 7 stripe or more) and Osphronemus septemfasciatus... The septemfasciatus i believe is a cross breed between the RTGG and the Black giant gourami (BGG)... coz septemfasciatus have the distinct body coloration of a RTGG (Dark top and brighter lower part of the body)... Not to mention the redness around its fin... but sometimes it will show the stripes around its body like the BGG... the spot on its rear tail can also be seen occasionally... I've caught the BGG, the septemfasciatus and also the RTGG... and when you put them all in one single tank (large tank), you will see the difference between the three.... and yes, these fishes are fishable in where i live... even the so-called-albino gourami...
BGG = Greyish coloration with stripes that dissapear when they grow larger (Becomes fully bright grey and sometimes a little yellowish...
Some have a big black spot on its rear (also called the elephant ear gourami) - this one may have redness on its fins...
RTGG = Everybody knows this one...
Dark black on the upper part and white on its body...
Very red fins including its... its... the long string on the bottom of its body...
septemfasciatus = orange/copper like coloration on the top of its body and a little brighter on the lower part...
yes red fins... but not as much as the RTGG...
Same coloration on the head as a RTGG except more orange/copper...

*But still, this is only my personal opinion...
