I guess if that's what you want to do, but if I were you I'd keep the bichirs in the 40g and wait on the Jag. What if you get him, but then plans change and you don't get a bigger tank?
That's probably your best bet.A 40 will never be big enough for a Jag,but it would do for the Bichirs.

I wouldn't buy a fish if you don't have a plan for upgrading. I've seen a lot of fish keeper's plans to upgrade fall through and their fish suffered for it.

Yes, but you can't set it up at your current location and you said your not sure when you'll move...

Even if im not out by then i used to own a female jag that was about 7-9 inches and she was housed with a oscar, midas, pacu, and jd for well over a year in a 55 until they were moved to a 75 then my friend offered me $150 for all my fish for his 300 gallon until the pacu died from jumping out of the tank. All other fish still in the tank and fine. Jag in 11 inches and mean. I figured the 55 would be fine for over year if i bout it and wanted to keep him in it. He will be the main fish along with the bichirs but hes the focus point of the tank. He will be about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches when i get one from the lfs

By the end of that year that 55g must have been very overstocked. I'd imagine most if not all of the fish were 7"+.

they were all pretty big. they were all around 6 inches when they got moved but the pacu was bigger. I never had a problem with aggression or water problems. I got rid of them so they could grow bigger. My new tank will only contain 4 fish and the jag is the main fish.
