I was thinking about makeing my filter like this, would it work?

red= media
blue = water level
the lil black pump.

the tank on the left will be acrylic and will hold media, while the water goes into that tank and than flows into the right one through a pvc pipe, which will be all water and a pump.

Yep that will work.

Why is the water level higher on the side with the media though?
Make sure you use big PVC.

Have you considered just using 1 tank and splitting in in half and doing the same thing?

Because my tank stand has supports in the middle so im gona have to set it up like that.
It fits like a 50gallon tank on eachside and thats all. so im gona split it up.

Water level? umm idk i just drew it really fast cuz i had to go lol. we are finishing the stand today.

Sweet. I would just use a few big peices of PVC
make sure it cant restrict the flow or you'll have problems. other than that it should work just fine.

Kk, i have 1 more question for the most monster mfker on here.

If i have 2 peices of 3/4" acrylic, one peice is :49" long x 28" tall. The other is 47" long x 28" tall. How could I cut these peices to make a tank.

Eliminate your second tank. It is unneeded redundancy. Put your pump in your sump before you add the media. Pack scrubbies around it before adding the mechanical filtration media. You really should section the tank so it will flow side to side. Use egg crate like I did and you won't loose much space. Then use the other tank as an off line wet/dry.

I cant like i said before, if my tank overflows than i need atleast 100gallons of sump and this is the only way.. So i have to have the second tank. thats why i asked for help on the size

That makes sense. How many gallons is your tank now? You need surge volume for the gallonage above the bulkheads for when the power goes out.

You can still use the second tank as a wet/dry and plumb them together high so that the wet/dry will double as surge volume.

surge??

the tanks 72x48x30 so 450

I was just gona drill the overflow hole and put an deflecter on it so the water has to go to the top of the bulk head. than on the return line i was gona point it towards the side of the tank where the acrylic joins together and forms that crack so it hits and causes no dead spots on the tank.

You won't need 100 gallons for surge volume. (surge meaning the amound that will drain to your filter when you power down ...or if you were to jump in). Fifty gallons should be reasonable. The 100 gallon point in the tank will be just above the point 1/4 of the distance from the surface. That is too wordy, just divide the depth by four and each quarter is just over 100 gallons. Your bulkheads will be well over this point.

If you are going to have a wet/dry and a prefilter, you will only need one tank. If you are going to have a sump and a wet/dry, then make it two with the wet/dry plumbed to take the surge volume.
