Here is some helpful information. Each inch of water in your tank will contain 14.5 gallons of water. If you have two inch bulkheads and the water is riding just at the top of them, you will need 30 gallons for surge volume. If your return fitting points down (and to the side) and it causes the return line to syphon one inch below the bulkheads (three inchs total) then you will need 43.5 gallons of surge volume.
