Could use some help with an i.d

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am thinking it’s a carpintis over jd, as it has two black spots on its side in the middle, as opposed to the one on the jd.

A little interesting trivia about either Herichthys species, is that the area they come from in Mexico, is seasonal.
Water temps may reach 82'F in summer, but drop to 65"F in winter.
And as adults the spots on tamasopoensis become more yellow, whereas carpintus more blue.
And the area tamasopoensis inhabit and prefer is usually near waterfalls, or areas with high flow, so they may require more oxygenated water movement to thrive (also provided in cooler water).
I didn't use heaters in tanks with either species, and in winter water temps dropped into the 60s, with no ill effects
Duanes the breeder I got my cyano & carp from in socal has told me similar he keeps alot of both species in an outdoor pond think year round . Said even socal there they have some colder weather at times mid to high 40° and they've always done great . We get a bit colder longer here so I got a plug in oil heater in the wellhouse to keep the temp up a little bit , but even that bad freeze last year we had here in TX no power close to a week straight my only fish that survived close to freezing water were my cyano's . I started heating rocks with propane heater a bit to warm the water barely helped. Thats what made me go with those 2 species first natives got me into the hobby and alot of our sunfish species extend as far down as northern Mexico like they do .
Tamasopoensis & deppi are both ones I'm looking into getting in the near future ... missed opportunity on deppi fry kicking myself for it out of space right now tho

At 5 bucks ill def be happy with either only had one jd but it was sickly wasn't able to save it.... I've got bad luck with big store fish, been wanting to get some good jd fry for a bit now . Think I got a pair out of my carp still got the 3rd thinking maybe a community tank for the ones that I don't have pairs for ?

Thinking possibly a texas or carpintis hybrid of some type ill snap a new pic when I get home today , this thing comes up to the glass like he's sizing me up! and just stares at me. Looked like lfs red texas or FH that haven't colored up yet noticed on the FH pics they have the black stripes all way up body in pics I've seen with small blue dots all over

The black is more of breeding dress/stress colors I think, more likely stress. Herichthyis will get a black back like that.
Time will tell if it’s a red Texas though.
