i am hopefully getting a 84"x30"x24" it will have a 40 gallon sump and a large external as filteration could i keep a silver aro in this tank?

You are 1 foot short on the ideal length, but I have seen them crammed in much worse conditions. I would say yes.

Here is a pick of one crammed in a 55 at a restaurant in las vegas. I personally have a 8 x 3 x 2 with three black aros, cichla, and a tigrinus. This is the biggest tank I have ever owned, but now that my blacks are past 24", I feel the need to upgrade again. Looking into a 10 x 5 x 3, based on the quotes I've received I think my best bet is a DIY plywood tank with glass viewing panel.

well i may upgrade the tank but not in the near future maybe a couple of years so how long do they take to 24"+

a year and a half to 2 years. It might not even become that big if you end up stunting it.

I don't see why everyone says you shouldn't.

95% of Silvers don't have the opportunity to be in that big of a tank. I'm sure a Silver would be much better off in your 3' wide than someone else 55 like most end up in.

I think you would be fine.

Agreed 100%. A 3' tank won't stunt it's growth. You have a good year and a half 2 years before it even reaches the 2' mark. Then you can upgrade.
