If you don't vac the gravel you will never have as healthy of a tank as you could.

Think of all the uneaten food and poop and muck that is in the gravel. Have you ever had a bare bottom tank? If you don't agree with me set one up and after a week tell me the crap on the bottom of the tank dosen't need to be removed.

Don't think that I'm attacking you this site is for ALL of us to learn from each other. I have 21 tanks

the best way to cycle would be to get better filtration ever use a under gravel filter (ugf) for cycling and keeping cycled it is far superior to waterfall filters or you could get a bio wheel they are alright... if you keep having problems with cloudiness call your lfs and ask if they rent diatom filters it makes it crystal clear within an hour...
 
usually after a water change or after u vacum the gravel in ur tank, the water will be cloudy.

give it some time, about a few hours or after a night. The next morning, the water should be clear again. That is if you have a mature, proper mechanical and bio filtration.

if your water is always cloudy, that means ur tank water is high in ammonia, something is wrong with your filter or it is not ready, mature enough to break down the bio-load of the tank.
 
My tanks never get cloudy after I vac the gravel.

I don't think that undergravel filters are the way, today we have so many more effective filters that unless you are running really low fish loads.

The best thing to do is test the water and then we can make informed recomendations.

Cloudy water can also be from over feeding and i9n that case the water would still test good.
