couple apisto updates

Really nice, I've been toying with the idea of adding some to one of my Discus tanks. Do you think they would be too much for the Discus?

they all spawn like clockworks, its just a matter of raising the fry/pulling the parents. This time I have removed the males. Seems like once the fry become food seeking, the female will pick off the babies to remove competition for spawning. She is quickly on eggs again. I figured its easiest to remove the male (and hopefully the spawning trigger) than to try and fish out 100+ fry from a heavily planted tank. After teh fry get to decent size, I will remove them to grow out and replace the male. Hopefully all goes well!

As I was reading your post, I was thinking about a two tank idea. Instead of removing just the male, what about removing the pair and placing them in new tank. Then you could raise the fry and now worry about the parents. Of course, this is to assume that relocating both of them would not interrupt the pairing.

that also assumes I have tank space to move a pair, lol. Right now, I am filled to saturation with fish that need to sell! Once I have a few tanks available, I could do that. Other issue is that these are totally unsuitable to keep with my invertebrates, which inhabit most of my smaller tanks. Right now i can pull the males to a very small holding tank for the few weeks until the fry are easier to pull. Will give it a try!

As far as compatability with discus, maybe. Their behavior would probably be ok, but the discus temps might be a bit high for most apistos.

Thanks, I didn't even think about the temerature I keep the Discus tanks right around 85, so yea that might be too high. That's why I asked, we learn every day. Thank you.

my pleasure! My favorite part of apistos is you can easily keep a pair in a 10-15g tank. Makes it easy to find room for them ;)

Aquanero - If you wanted to try an apisto species with discus, I'd try A. hoignei ... they come from the same waters as blue rams, so are used to temps in the 82F-90F range.

msjinkzd - Sorry to hear about your wild female. They were the prettiest apisto you had.

still have the male! I might import some wild cacs just to have more of a choice for him. I am also goign to upgrade the tank size. Even the wild females were a bit saucy.

...first off awesome apistos and thanks for sharing.

second, I'm thinking of getting a breeding group of cacatuoides(2 males/three females) would I be able to house ALL of them in 20 long?

yup, but you are going to need ample huts/caves or plants. My dominant male cac has harassed to death several male tankmates (these are domestic triple reds). The dominant female tends to harass her fellow females as well so you need to make sure eveyrone has someplace to go to hide when spawning mode is on (which is always)
