Im going to start out by saying i dont know much about cichlids but im thinking about starting a ca/sa only tank. more specifically for a jag (Parachromis managuensis) and a oscar. i would try and get two females to limit fighting.

Now the questions.

is it possible to house them together in a 120g?

if not what is a tank size suitable to comfortably house them for life?

does anybody currently keep these two together?

and any other tips would be greatly appreciated :)

oh, and if it comes down too it and if theres no way to house the two together which would you choose jag or oscar?

Oscars are pretty timid while jags are one of if not the most aggressive cichlid species. Not to mention they go toe to toe with Oscars in size. I wouldn't suggest it. Oscars get bullied A LOT. They're like kittens

I've never kept a Jaguar cichlid, but I do know they can be aggressive and I'll echo the poster above that Oscars are kittens lol. In a 120 I'd do a pair of Oscars. With that size tank that would be about it, but they'd be ok in that tank with maybe a pleco or two and some smaller (but not too small) dithers.

so not even if i got say a male oscar and female jag ( maybe a male O would be more aggressive then female jag?)

or if i go the other way and decide on jags what would be the size of the aquarium that would be able to house them?

Oscars are NOT aggressive regarded of sex unless its amongst each other. A single pair of jags should be alright in your 125

I've kept them together in a 150 gal without a problem. Best to get them young and grow up together. I found both species to be more bluff than bite with each other. I would not add other fish later on though, if you have one of each, they will set up a territory that takes 50% each of the tank.
Add something else later, and you risk all but 1 dead.

Thats what i was planing on doing anyways but in a 120 would it work thats really the biggest i could do atm anything else is to big (my lfs only carries 90 100 120 180 G tanks and 180 is just way too big atm

I would only do it in a 120 long, not a 120 high. 120 long is the same footprint as a 150 I believe, and it's footprint more than gallons, that's important.
I would also have double filtration and rinse the mechanical part daily, if you have a filter rated for a 120, get 2, and do many more water changes than is normally called for. Why ? you may ask?
Because I've seen too many Oscars with "hole in the head" from low water quality. They seem very sensitive to nitrates, probably because an Oscars natural waters would have nitrates of less than 1ppm.

A lot of Oscars get holes in their head from too many feeder fish too. They are loaded with bacteria not good for cichlids

i believe feeders shouldnt be fed unless the fish is 100% piscivorous and wont accept prepared food otherwise theres too many risks associated with them. thats not the reason i want these fish anyways. And would a fluval g6 and a sump be anygood?
