The first fish is probably three times the mass of the second fish. These are both green sunfish right?

look like bluegill to me.

I can say not a green and the pectoral fin isn't long enough to be bluegill. I would guess at L. miniatus for the top fish.

I thought they where bluegill when I first caught them as well. But teleost is right, the pectoral fin isn't long enough to be a bluegill. I followed the sunfish id chart...

1b. - 3 spines on anal fin

6b. - forked caudal fin

8a. - lateral scale row less then 55, vertical stripes, no thick horizontal stripe along lateral line.

9b. - cheek and preopercular area without 3 to 5 distinct stripes. (I don't know if there are teeth on tongue and I don't know how to tell if the supramaxilla bone is there or not..)

10b. - Pectoral fin short and doesn't extend past the eye. From tip of fish's mouth to end of caudal pedunkle/start of caudal fin is more then 3.5x the length of the pectoral fin.

13a. - opercular tab not greatly elongated. I can't tell about the gill rakers.

14b - later scale row less then 40 (at least by my count). (A) longer then (B). Short snout.

I think you got it teleost, thanks!

Next question... anyone kept these before?

Let's work a bit more on the ID before we suggest how to care for the unknown fish. What kind of habitat did you find this fish in and what river system? This info might rule out L. miniatus.

colorado river near austin. it's sandy bottomed. was trapped in a low water pool. it's in their range.

Cool. I feel a bit more comfortable about the ID but I very well could be wrong...it was a guess after all. I currently keep L. miniatus. Pretty peaceful, eat well and a pretty fish. Unfortunately they stay pretty small and not a good candidate for a food fish.

I agree with Teleost about the top fish.

The second one looks like a redbreast to me. How big is the second one?

2nd one is very small... 1.5" maybe. thought it was a juvi of the above fish. I'm trying to learn my native fish before I stock a whole tank of them hehe. I guess finding bluegill is harder then I thought.
