Couple green sunfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've got both of those fish in a tank with a couple goldfish. This morning I threw a few worms in for the goldfish.. didn't really expect the redspotted sunfish or the other one (I think it's a green sunfish.. it's got some nice color in the tank) to eat so I didn't bring enough worms for them. Well the little one grabs a worm and starts eating it and the big one grabs the other end and they start tugging. Big one wins. Then it went and ate another worm before the goldfish could get to it. I guess I know what to feed it.

what about Lepomis punctatus??

I think their range goes to Austin, but i am unsure.

the spots are barely visible most of the time

hmt - that fish in your picture looks very similar in shape but this one doesn't have the light colored 'trim' around the anal & dorsal fins.

They used to be L. punctatus miniatus down here, but are now L. miniatus. I think ya'll nailed em-Redspotted up top and Redbreast down below. The redbreasts aren't native, but get to be a decent size. One trait, other than the usual ones listed, that I use on redbreasts is their caudal fin gets dark gray to black at the posterior end, which the one above is showing.

I would say hybrid sunfish doesnt look like a green to small of mouth. And i dont thin it has the colore of a bluegill

Yeah, it was established it was neither of those fish, but there are a lot of sunfish species out there. As much as people like to say hybrid, it really doesn't happen all that often in nature.

i know for sure neither of those are a green sunfish, now that i took a second look i would have to agree with you guys on them being redspotted and redbreast sunfish
