I've heard they grow slow, I don't really mind that, should be fun watching them get big. What is the "average" growth rate for them?

Thanks QueenslandeR, it is pool filter sand with a small bit of their old gravel I didn't bother scooping out.

JD_Man, I think you're right, these guys are pretty fun to watch

great loaches ..those two in the bag looked great and good size.. loaches grow a spec a year... that is how slow it seems anyhow... but after awhile when you do not think about it anymore you will suddenly have these big plump guys.. and then you will say wow they grew.. that is how slow it is when you no longer expect them to grow they will suddenly be bigger..so what ever you do ..don't watch them and expect it.. be surprised when it happens....

They grow quickly until 4-5 inches although it slows down beyond that depending on the conditions provided.

And thank-you as well Liz, that sounds like my biggest pleco, he was around 4 inches it seemed like forever and then all of a sudden he was around 8 or 9 inches
