Another query, if you all would be so generous. How aggressive can Bichir be? The Sankarani is a female and she is on a tear. She has been death rolling the Kouloton and my Clarotes laticeps. The Koulton buggies on out of there mostly unscathed and she doesn't give chase but the Laticeps almost lost half his face. I saw the injury and had no idea where it came from but just tonight, I saw her grab him and roll with him. I moved him but I was surprised as all the others have shown no aggression at all, not to each other or anything else but they're also all males.
Lol, They're more expensive than I thought but for me it's been the shipping that was the shocker. My penchant for Mammon and Kamfa in the past and Albinos and Platinums recently has helped prepare me for Bichir collecting. lol I was surprised I had only one female, well I haven't checked the Platinum Endli but the Gisela/Tanganyika, Dabola Endli, PBB and now the Kouloton are all males. Going to see about asking for some females going forward. ThanksGet ur wallet ready lol… “the more the merrier” is rule of thumb here. I think 10 and up is kinda suggested to keep the peace and keep the group from being flighty. 6 was also a bad number for me. Had a PBB who went after everyone. I checked her with adding 2 more congicus and life went on as normal. Im still under stocked myself with only 8. Things have been fine/good tho, for now.
Im sure Hao will offer better/more advice here, im still a neub in this area.
Thanks for the inputI've kept as little as 1-10 bichirs and as many as 30ish bichirs in one tank (if they want to fight, they'll fight regardless of how many bichirs you have). Adding more bichirs may or may not help with aggression as it comes down to individual personality. Bichirs generally I would say are not aggressive but there are some out there that are just not friendly towards other bichirs/fish. Fin nipping is quite normal here and there so that does not bother me. For me, it's only a concern when the aggression stresses the other bichirs out and they stop eating (generally pretty bad for that to happen as bichirs are very resilient fish).
I've personally found female bichirs to be more chill than male bichirs (but of course, personality comes into play). It's usually the male bichirs that are fighting each other or nipping the females (likely hormones raging).Lol, They're more expensive than I thought but for me it's been the shipping that was the shocker. Thanks for the inputHao . As I mentioned it's only the female who's aggressive. The others get along just fine, sometimes laying next to one another sometimes not but no aggression that I've witnessed. I was wondering if female Bichir might be inherently more aggressive which is why I asked. As you said though I guess it's just her personality. She doesn't chase but certain fish if they're in her path she latches onto. The male Kouloton has some fin damage as she targets his pectoral and tail fin. The Laticeps though she was targeting his gill area up to and including his eye. Other cats she completely ignored like my Albino Rhamdia Quelen.
Again, thank you both for the advice and info.
