I got everything up and running today. Everything is going well except for a couple "annoyances".

1) on one of the overflows, the inlet part makes a lot of noise and it lost suction a couple of times. I have one of those sink drain strainers (similar to the picture below) in it and if i pull it out, it's not loud anymore but if i put it back in, it loses suction and I have to suck on the valve again. Obv., I need to do something different. What would you recommend?

2) the water coming out of the pump bounces on the front glass and is blowing the sand away. the oulet is 1" pipe and i had a spraybar off of it that is about a foot long. should I just make it longer and drill a different size hole (didn't glue that part in) or something different?

thanks

1. What type of overflow do you have? Do you have a pic?

2. I would put a bigger spraybar with bigger holes in it.

2. bigger as in expand to a larger pvc size or just make it longer?

1. I don't have any pix of the overflows for some reason, but they look like the one in the following picture, except there is no elbow at the top of the standpipe (pipes are turned a little differently too, but same idea). this pic was taken from one of the overflow threads

The gurgling is coming from the intake pipe. without the 90* piece on there, you are getting the full blast of noise from the intake.

You could either put bigger holes in the spraybar, or you could split the pipe and have two spray bars. That will reduce the flow to each output.

i know they're supposed to gurgle, but the other one isn't loud at all and even if i cover up the pipe almost completely, it's still as loud. i tried using a 90 but couldn't get the water level right. i didn't get an answer to my question of where to put it in relation to my desired water level.

i'll try drilling bigger holes first and then go from there.

Sorry, I missed that question. You really want the overflow to as high as possible in the tank. I would shoot for to sit just underneath the lid. There is no "perfect" spot, but that would be a good ballpark.

As far as the gurgling, you said that the other one does not gurgle? I wonder if the noisy one is picking up more flow than the other, hence why it is gurgling. Also, could one of them be lower than the other. If the answer to those is no, the I would look for an air leak somewhere. You might have air trapped in the lines causing mroe noise.

No worries. It wasn't that I didn't know where I wanted to water level to be, but what part of the elbow would determine the water level (bottom, top, etc.).

there may be 1cm difference between the two as far as their height. The one that's gurgling is actually flowing less. Well, the flow fluctuates from what appears to be equal to the other to quite a bit less. I can't recall which one is lower right now. I will try sucking more air out first and go from there.

this one is hard to answer. There are a lot of variable that go into that. How big the pipes are, what kind of gph you are running, restrictions in the design of the overflow. It is almost a "see it in action" kind of answer. If I had to say, most will tenk to hold at the mid-to-upper half of the 90* on the overflow.

ok, thanks. IDK if I can get the extension pieces off to try it an elbow. I didn't glue it, but had to hit them w/ a mallet to go on. I'll mess with other stuff and see if I can get it to even out and quiet down. What else do people use to cover the top of the pipe to keep stuff out?

I may just need to try something else. I know I can use netting and a rubber band, but that looks pretty tacky.
