couple sump questions (overflow and outlet)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'll explain it, but Mike Dunagan made one in the Indy DIY thread.

Tank a cover for a shower drain, one with the square hole pattern. Out of the center, cut a circular piece that will fit inside one end of the elbow. Then, you just PVC glue the circular piece into the end of the 90* elbow. Tada, instant strainer. You can clean it by just pulling off the 90* elbow.

cool, thanks.

you know, there might be a tiny bit of air getting in the one-way valve. I will silicone them in and see if that helps. I did drill the hole small enough to where they're very snug, but there's a slight possibility that I'm getting a little air through there. The strainer I have works great on the other, but messes w/ the flow on the gurgling one.

One other thing to keep in mind. Those air valves tend to not hold up long. You might try to stick another one right behind that one. You might see some improvement. An aqualifter is also recommended for these overflows. Then you do not have to worry about the check valves.

k, will do.

huh, never heard of them. so, it just sucks the air out of the line instead pushing it in?

Instead of a "aqua lifter" i just hook the air line up to the air intake of a filter, This will suck any air out of the top loop always, and when power fails and comes back on mine sucks the air out straight away and away she goes again..
By air intake i mean where you can add bubbles to the jet of water, if that makes sense.

Much easier alternative and solved a huge problem for me :D

The best example of this I have seen is on powerhead pumps. You could drop one of those behind the rock wall and keep things moving behind there.

Well, I finally got around to trying a different type of strainer and it worked. I only replaced one (the one that was making the noise) and now all I get is the usual gurgle sound and it's not loud at all :D

everything else is working great. I still haven't even had to clean the filter socks.

I also made the spraybar longer and with bigger holes and it doesn't push the sand around anymore. I'm very happy with it.

Thanks for all the comments and help along the way :)

I also got a lift pump for it and it's soooo much nicer...no more worrying about the overflows not restarting (unless the strainers clog up)

Glad it worked out so easily.
