i was just courious there seems to be alot of hostility toward wolfhybrids on this board and i was wondering why and where you get your information from as far as "most states banning them " which is not true in fact most states allow wolf hybrids .. alot of them regulate them but they technically fall under the exotics rule and you wouldent have an unregistered exotic . Also all this about them being dangerous .. well so are pitbulls and rottis and gsd etc . not to be mean i'm not meaning to be argumentative but i am courious as to where your hostility comes from and why .. thoose of you with issues have you interatced with a bonified wolf or wolf hybrid before . and techinally as far as gentics they can find not differnce between a wolf /wolfhybrid and your common pet dog . and o.k. we still have a ways to go but before you deceide to discriminate an entire group of dogs rember just like we do qith people every individual is diffrent . some wolves and wolf hybrids are the sweetest dogs you will ever meet , some are high agressive dogs some just have bad owners like any other breed so your reasearch and make sure they are right for you and check with real reputable breeders and people who have them and care for them as companions and parts of there famliy . i do understand there are alot of stupid people breeding "wolf hybrids " or what there calling one and stupid owners or just uneducated owners who do not know what there getting into but really any dog can be dangerous in the wrong hands or sometimes simpley uneducated hands . Sorry for my bit . thanks to any with informed constructive comments .oh if you want info on my sorces e-mail me privately and i will give you any or all (long list ) .

In my experiance they are skittish mouthy and super jumpy and its stupid to keep one. They are a dog that wants to run so you have to keep them tied up ALWAYS and thats just not right to leave a high strung dog on a chain plus they tend to be unpredictible you dont want the neighbor kid wandering over and getting mauled atleast I dont and its not a chance I would take. If you want a good friend get a dog and leave the wolves in the wild were they belong.

If you're referring to the four legged animal, I have had them in the past.

To properly keep a wolf hybrid you need to have an incredibly spacious area with some sort of prey on the land otherwise the animal will slowly turn on you and attempt to dominate you. Without a lot of experience with dogs I don't recommend them as domination in the wolf world is throat biting, and wrestling, and they will kill you because your throat is a lot less protected than theirs.

A wolfe's social structure is based on dominance and pack hierarchy and is ingrained geneticly. Things in nature that are unlearned are not easily untaught. For example a fourth generation captive bred lion is still able to survive in the wild (a widly known and publicised story of recent internet and telivision interest).

The earlier comment about being unpredictable is really the heart of the issue. With domesticated wild animals it is impossible to illiminate all unknowns. Like, neighbors going in the yard to get a baseball or one of your own children loosing their "rank in the pack" so whenever you bring a wild animal into your house you bring in the risk of any dangers associated with them as well. For example, if you bring in a red foot tortoise that was just fed mango he may very well poop right on your carpet (hapened to me yesterday), but the biggest problem is the smell and no one was killed maimed or scarred emotionally for life. You bring in a geneticaly watered down wolf who still has instincts hidden down deep inside and the accidental startiling of the "dog" turns into a mauling of a small child. In my opinion no matter how sweet and affectionate that animal will be most of the time, it isn't worth the risk of what may happen.

Also, you need to ask yourself what your motivation for owning one in the first place is. Do you think they are cool and would keep one if it was safe and would be willing to select another pet if it wasn't... or do you have a deep and intense need to own a dangerouse wild animal that has been tamed by your advanced skill with animals.

The first choice is usualy made by people who act on impulse without doing any real research (like the guys who bought the lion). Had they thaught things through they would have made a much different choice.

If it is the second choice then their are some issues to deal with. People generaly make these type of decision in order to feel powerful or in control. This is a way of compensating for feeling a lack of power or control in everyday life. It is the same principal behind what leads people into all sorts of self destructiv or endangering behaviors such as eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, self mutililation, and substance abuse. While owning a dangerouse pet definately seems less extreeme than cutting yourself, it does run the risk of hurting those around you.

haha i thought dovii cichlid at first. some good friends of mine had a wolf and for the most part is was great. he regarded craig, the dad, as the top guy in the pack and only placed himself second from the bottom just above their 10 year old boy. he was never aggressive torwards him but would steal his food and take his spot on the couch every time he had the opportunity, which i guess is kind of aggresion, but him and the boy would play and he was always very gentle and protective of him. he would do anything craig said immediately though, so the that was cool. they also had a very large fenced yard. he made a good part of the family for them but i can see how he could have turned out much worse very easily without the propper training and room to run.
in my opinion getting a wolf is taking on a responsibility of more than just feeding them, you must give him all the fenced room he needs, and take every precaution to protect neigboors and their animals. i think they are also better suited to a family of stern adults with no children and idealy just a single person with the experience and time to teach the wolf you are boss.
