ok like 15 minutes ago my hut busted off the rock and flew into the top of my tank. so i need a better way to hold it down or a better way to vent air.
I went to my LFS, Aquatic Emporium, and they had a discontinued under water crab bubble. All it was is a fancy tupperware container with a lid and an entrance for the crab, flipped upside-down and filled with rocks. No air pumping into the air bubble. They said it worked great and they have never had a crab die since they have sold crabs. I offered him 20 bucks for it and they said NO because it was discontinued. Their was no model or brand on it either. Well this is all it was...and I will be constructing something simalar this weekend.
If the rocks inside of the bubble will not hold it down, you could go with Snailmaster's idea to silicone the lid of the tupperware to a heavy piece of slate or flat rock.
I would still recommend placing an air hose within crab home so it is constantly recycled air. I think the best idea was Snailmaster's air difuser that will allow the old air to slowly leak out while the new air fills the bubble.

This is an idea I've considered doing for a crayfish breeding tank just so I can get more ground area for them. My idea was getting a piece of acrylic and using aquarium sealant to create an entire "floor" halfway up the tank, with an opening of a ramp that extended down to the actual bottom of the tank. I'd also use the sealant and more acrylic sheets to make a wall on the lip of the fake floor to hold water. Then all I'd have to do is pump air under the fake floor. Excess air just bubbles under the wall and up and out of the tank, providing some nice aeration as well. Never had a chance to try it though.
As for making a stand alone container, it should definately work fine. Just need to make sure it's weighed down enough to keep it secure.

Did you ever create a working hut snailmaster? I kind of gave up....Not having the right tools to complete a project is a B****.
I just came into a couple of plastic 2.5g tanks. I might have to play with this idea some and just use some large pieces of rock to hold it down.

Here's my idea. The aquarium will either be on stilts of sorts or have half of the front and rear panel cut out. This will remove the need for a doorway/entrance. The vent would use a air line regulator to adjust the pressure. The Sides of the aquarium could be covered with rocks, driftwood or plants to make it blend in. I've been wnting some Neuts for a while, I don't see why something like these wouldn't work for them or any creature that needs land and water. Maybe even for breeding snails that need to deposit eggs out of water(?)
Seems like a do able idea but i have a couple of ideas to help.
1I found that if the airline is connected to the tub it creates a lot of back pressure so you might find it easier to bubble in from the base up into the box.
2. You might be able to build it like a tanks with two sides build up then have a top plate. So it would look a tank with two raised sides and a top on it then flip it and silicon it in saving yourself the hassle with rocks.

yeah i was having trouble thinking how to put that across. you could silicon a small tank part way up to allow for the space for the crabs to get in and out then use strips of glass from the front like legs .
they dont need to take the weight so much resist the up force from the air trapped inside.
so the ole side of the tank would be siiconed on and have strips of glass for reinforcement.
