Got a free 180 tank. Its beat up one corner overflow stand and cover. I have it, but one pane has huge crack. Is it worth to buy a new pane and replace? What would it cost for the glass.
I repaired a 6 ft tank by sandwiching the length of the stress cracks (on a side and back panel) with two slightly larger sized panes over the two cracks, I had it working for years, when I moved I gave the tank away, and believe its still in use.
Below, photo soon after it was fixed.
The pane on the outside glass was thin enough to work between the frame, and glass.
I had thought about this but im glad you posted. My friend was bummed because he dropped the one side. Im gunna give this a shot. You used glass of same thickness or?
Since you are simply sealing it off (if that's sufficient , because the panel is strong enough (I can only guess without photos?) the glass may not need to be quite as thick, I've also done this on bottom cracks.
You'll notice with mine, I used sealer on the actual crack itself, not just around the outside of the panes.
Not Aesthetically pleasing but my aim was to hold back any extra spider cracking from water pressure.
This is also why I used simple GE1, because I didn't figure I needed tactile strength, (the water pressure alone helping to hold the panel in place). If I thought I needed more holding strength, I might have used one of the sealants with more holding power like 3M 5200 (the one I just used on a tank separated by the recent earth quakes here).
I reaized the crack goes from top to bottom. Im gunna try to get 1/2 thick as big as is reasonable to price. May even get a new panel. But if its all too expensive jsut wait for another used one. Dont want ot spend anything above 100 bucks.
ill post a pic later just for the heck of it
I would price a new pane anyway just to see actual price.
If it were me I would replace. That’s a big pane of glass cracked right down the center.
If it were in the corner or something it would be different
