I have a 90 gallon with about a 7 inch crack in a corner... it JUST happened, luckily I was here and caught it... being 3/8ths plate glass, it's too expensive to replace the panel.. ...it's in the back panel...

so.. would using "too much" silicone to "blob" over the crack work or am I just setting myself up for disaster here.. I'd really hate to have to put something stupid like a lizard in this tank because I broke it.

I would call up a few glass shops and see how much they'd charge for a new piece of glass. It might be cheaper than you think. Plus you'll have the ease of mind knowing it was done right.

yeah.. there's one around the corner, but I think if I "weld" the crack with lots of silicone it will hold. ...not to mention it's a 48x24 inch piece of 3/8ths glass... NOT cheap.

The silicone would do good on keeping water from leaking out, but probably wouldn't do much to reinforce the integrity of the glass itself. Silicone probably wouldnt help keep the crack from growing either. It may hold but a decent hit from a fish or from an outside source could cause the crack to get bigger or break. Good luck!

3/8's.. THats almost as cheap as you can go aside from 1/4.. Have you priced it.. Shoul only be aroudn 100.00 tops..

at this moment and time I can't afford 100 on a piece of glass. I think if I bury the crack in silicone and give the tank a big huge scar in the corner it will be fine. Like I said it's on the corner.. almost a chip. ..but bigger than a chip.

I agree silicone will not add structuarl integrity to the tank. A little but not much.

Can you post a picture of the problem? I have a few tanks that are chipped that work fine.

Edit: Nevermind....didn't see the 7" part. Disregard my previous statement.

in the long run it would blow out ..make sure you have the number of your local flood clean up crew handy
