I have a 1996 ktm 250 that i took in on trade with the idea that I would ride with my son. My wife just got her bike license so I need to sell the ktm to buy her a street bike.

The ktm has a fresh piston and the top end has been reworked. It needs a throttle, kill switch and a rear fender. I have a spare tire and 2 exhausts. I am open to trades in the way of street bikes like a 750 honda shadow or similar bikes.

It is for 995$. I am wondering if the kill switch, and throttle are hard to get replaced. Anyone got any ideas. And is it a good deal. Or not...

Kill switch and fender are easy. What is wrong with the throttle? Does it need a cable?

yeah sounds like a pretty fair deal. my uncle is selling his 01 rm 250 for like 1400. the good thing about the two strokes is their so easy to rebuild plastics are pretty much all you have to worry about. maintenance i guess over all.

^I think you have four strokes and two strokes confused there bud....

OP: Not bad, Plus the throttle itself isn't a bad fix. Basically, it looks like a plastic grip, with a cable attached. Take off the right grip, and check out the white plastic. If it is cracked up pretty good, then yea, you will need a new one. Also, look to see if the cable is broken.

If they both check out, then the cable is probably just stretched. Have you tried adjusting the cable tension?

BTW, is this a four or two stroke? They made both in the 250s.

I have to call yet and ask how bad the stuff is. But i was just wondering on ur opinions of how easy it is to repair. Looked likea good deal to me

He didnt say imma ask when i call. I hope its 2 stroke

TBH, I'm not sure I would do it. I would rather spend the extra 2k, and grab a CRF250, for a beginner bike. If you have been riding for a bit, grab the CRF450F. Such a beastly bike. (That is what I am currently on, as well as an XR400)

That being said, the price itself isn't tooooooo bad for the bike. I would just be wary of a 13 year old 2 stroke.

Also, I have changed out both of those (killswitch and throttle), and neither were that bad.

2 strokes honestly are not that bad, and you can do alot to them to make them easier to ride. 2 strokes are a hell of a lot easier to maintain seeing as my uncle rarely has to do maintenance on his bike and every 2 rides i'm swapping oil or changing some fluid on my 08rmz 250. you can buy a recluse clutch for the 2 stroke and that keeps it from stalling out, and it well let you put around pretty much like the bike was a 4 stroke.

even if your nervous about how old the engine is. if you know anyone that can repair a 2 stroke engine such as a weed wacker or chain saw, then you can have them rebuild your bike and it would probably cost you maybe $100 in parts.
