I got my 150-gallon off Craigslist. The guy lived in a real bad area, and I had problems finding his house. When I got there, the place was pretty run-down and nasty. When he showed me the tank, I almost laughed. It was the nicest thing in his house. Got a good deal on it too...$250 for the tank, stand, filters, lights...basically everything needed.

After I went there, I made another CL trip to a town about 45 minutes away. I bought some fish of a retired couple that was moving and getting rid of their tank. I was there for some cichlids and a monster pleco, and they sold me all their aquarium decorations for $25. Was a good deal...they gave me EVERYTHING in their 125(?) gallon tank.

After I got my tank set up, I was talking about my fish tank at my LFS. A guy offered me $100 for the fish I bought (minus the pleco), and came and got them a few days later. In the end, I made about $50 on the fish, and I still have the tank.

There have been a few other deals that haven't worked out, but overall, I think CL has been pretty good to me thus far.

from personal experience i agree craigslist (the website) looks pretty shady, i prefer using kijiji. from the few deals ive done that actually went down, i never had a problem making the deal but you get to meet interesting characters. i met a 12 year old kid who had his dad drive him (dad looked kind of suspicious like a drug deal was going down), met a guy who drove 5 hours for 2 ID sharks and offered to let me stay at his house if i ever go visit :irked: .
like it being said before a few minute conversation with someone would give you a good or bad impression of a person if the deal will go down. before a deal i always call or have them call me to confirm the time and place to meet, the worst is going to a meeting place with a bag of fish and the other guy doesnt show up.
also in terms of scammers on sites like CL, those of us who get the good deals, if not free stuff i think are the real scammers, but its okay because we're all legit people looking in the right places.
