When in doubt...get Siamese Algae Eaters...the true ones!! Can be a pain to find...but they eat EVERYTHING when it comes to algae. Seriously, they are probably the best algae eater out there...just don't get big enough to keep with the larger cichlids...:(. Next come bristle nose and royals..followed by otocinclus. I have an over abundance of Malyasian Trumpet Snails right now...breeding so freakin fast!! But they tear up the algae.....and stir the sand like crazy! Seriously though, don't get these guys unless you have some sort of snail eating fish to regulate them...lol...i started out with 15 or so...now i have over 300...lol...just two months....

which do you think will be safe in a 20 long with 2 yellow labs, 2 socolofi, and 2 other african cichlids? all about 1.5 - 2 inches long.

Your better off getting a common pleco, and trading it in when it's job is done. It will outgrow the tank, but so will the other fish. Africans are nasty, and will probably eat any soft-scaled bottom-dweller..

Yes, definately different types of Algae. Ottos are diatomivores, which means they eat diatomic matter, such as.. Brown Algae! However, if its the hard brown algae someone mentioned, you have other issues.

Algae Blooms in planted tanks usually come from an inbalance of Micro/Macronutrients. If you are trying to use fertilizer, and not do water changes, this could be why. To remedy this, do smaller, more frequent water changes to keep your nutrient level balanced. I have heard reccomendations such as 10-15% a week for planted tanks.

When there is an imbalance of 'food source' for the plants, they will no longer photosynthesize, allowing algae to grow instead of the plants. 'Food Source' for plants would be Light, Nutrients, and Co2. If any 3 of these are out of proper balance (ie: Intense lighting with no Co2 supplement), then your plants will not grow, and Algae will.

If the plants are properly growing, they should out-compete the nutrients from the Algae, hindering the algae's growth. If a planted tank is balanced properly, a couple of very small algae eaters should be able to keep up.

SAEs kick ass if you find the right kind, and they don't suck on your fish. Flying Foxes are good for hair algae. Ottos for Brown. Ancistirus for Algae in general.. and Panaque will eat your wood. Ha! :)
