First one that comes to mind is Pygmy sunfish and pumpkinseed (an abnormally large one would need more).
Ok thanks what about a rock bass
Pumpkinseed and Rock Bass are awesome fish. I have caught both with artificial lures and hook and bobber. Both are great looking fish in their own right.

Native stocking!

If I had a powerhead, I would do Mottled Sculpin and Darters.

You can do some kind of sunfish - Pumpkinseed -

Rock Bass get to big for a 40

Maybe some sticklebacks and some other small fish like Flagfish or topminnows

Some Crawdads and little Mosquitofish

Hogchokers are like freshwater flounder. They can go in freshwater, but they like a bit of salinity

These are just things that come to mind. Tell us what you want. Predatory? Bottom dwellers? top level? action? solo?

Hello Bradyfam Bradyfam ,
A Rock Bass can get 10"-12" in length. I think there have been specimens on record up to 17". If you had a 75/90g I think you could maybe make it work. You'd be better off with a Pumpkinseed as they don't get that large, they top out at 10" but they are usually smaller but you still need a 75/90gallon. Crappies are way to big for your 40g tank also.
