(I know it's kinda long, please read the whole thing, it will only take a minute, I promise! :D)

My family is moving soon, and we've been checking out lots of houses. There's a beautiful house in the neighborhood that we are interested in. The upstairs doesn't have enough rooms for me, my 2 sisters, and my parents, so I would be in the basement, seeing as I'm the wierd teenager. I loved the basement, it was huge and cozy, with my own bathroom and laundry room. The owner showed us the 'secret' crawlspace, the opening of which is concealed by a shutter similar to those on the front windows. He showed us inside, and it was roughly 15 x 15 feet, and about 5 feet tall. He said that there is dirt directly under the floor, which was only that fluffly pink stuff (cotton candy? lol)

So anyway, I got the inspiration to turn it into a lizard enclosure. My dad and I love big lizards, and we even used to have a savannah monitor. We've been trying to get a hold of a tegu, but we havent figured out how to house an adult. So the crawlspace is certainly big enough, and it didn't feel cold like I thought it would, so I guess it's just as insulated as the rest of the house. The opening was a 3' x 3' metal hatch thing, and I don't see any reason not to replace it with a window. But could it work? I don't know much about crawlspaces, so I don't know what could really go wrong, if anything. Actually, Im not even sure what crawlspaces are for, so if turning one into a lizard enclosure would screw up the house somehow, I wouldnt know. Obviously it would require some effort to make it work, and look good at the same time. Since it is a pretty dark place, no amount of UVB lights are going to be any substitute for good old natural sunshine. Believe me, any tegu of mine will probably be spending more time out of his cage than inside of it!

Well... Whatcha think?

if you furnished it really well thatd be an amazing lizard home... jus make sure its clean and stuff like put down a new floor like some sort of hard wood or plastic panels or idk somthing but it sounds cool just wait for other people on this one im not pro

depends on where you are located. and the pink stuff should be on the top of the crawl space(insulation). with a dirt floor, or a plastic underlayment. the crawlspace is for home maintance reasons, ie cleaning repairing pipes, fixing ventalation, ect. most are ventalated to reduce moistior build up, which is not good if it gets cold. also you would want to put something up so your critter couldnt get to the insulation. just a few thoughts

lol! never paid a heating bill i take it? not mean just honest. also the insulation will be helpfull in keepin the incolsure temp regulated

That would be an amzing enclosure if you furnish it correctly. Tegus rock! I hope to get one someday too.

you really need to post more info and some pics. the reason being toxicity, asbestos and lead. if this house is as old as it sounds you need to have it inspected before you buy. not just for the lizard but for you as well. i would need to know if the floor is a hardwood or if it is just sub flooring with a carpet overlay to really give you the right info. feel free to private message me anytime, i am not a general contractor but do have quite a bit of experience in this field (home building as well as comercial).

o yeah i forgot, it could work out really well for you because of the earth being a pretty constant temp. it is called geo thermal heat.

dde1878 ht it right on the head. of course if its insulation you have to have a solid barrier between it and your lizard. also although insulation isnt the most flammable thing around with the lights and the heat they produce you have to be careful cause they will overheat real quick if there is no where for the heat to escape. pics would be very helpful... but it sounds like a very cool idea. i had an iquana for a long time and i built his cage out of one of those large two door closets. i pretty much made an entire cage and placed it inside.

I will definately cover the insulation. I live in Virginia, by the way.

Because this is pretty much a new idea and I've never seen or heard of it done before, I will be extremely cautious and have the place inspected top to bottom!

The hard part is trying to get my mom to agree!
