crayfish didnt make it home

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its definately not water temp, ive pulled crays from freezing water and dropped them in my tanks and they are not effected

i say stress, one time i took a full grown cray out of my tank, he was killing too many of my fish, clipped off one half of his large pincher with a sizzors, dropped him back in the tank, he rolled up in a ball on the way to the bottom of the tank and layed there, i thought he was playing dead, came back like an hour later and he was still in the ball, dead fur real.

Have done this too numerous rogue crays, i like them to scavange on the bottom and clean up after my piranha, have also had some die during molting, i think they are cool little critters

they are escape artists, be sure your tank is sealed up, they will surprise you

:iagree:
Gumbo anyone? Sorry couldn't resist. :)

I bought mine from a walmart several months ago.. was only about 1/2"-3/4" long, and tried moving him this last weekend to my new house about 2hours away, and he died :( was about 5-6" at time of death...
not sure how or why either, cause all the other fish survived...
but best of luck...

lol, ive kept crays in cups from burger king for the ride home

take a clay flowerpot and break into 1" chunks

take a bucket, the chunks, a block of ive, and a styrofoam cooler with you

as you catch the crayfish, put them in a bucket that is anchored to the bottom of the river, but only with 2 inches of water so the water stays cool

when you are ready to leave, place the bucket in the cooler, break up the ice and pour into the cooler around the bucket, then drop 4 pieces of flowerpot in, and close the cooler

that should work

dont try to cradle the bucket to stop the rocking, allow it to shake, this disorientates the crays, prevents fighting, and helps with aeration

hope it works out, take pics!

The broken pots let them hide=less stress.
the ice sounds like the best idea lower temp=more oxygen can be in the water
Inverts are alot more delicate than fish, but once you get them into a tank theyll be fine.and they are jumpers make sure the tank is totally covered
