Crayfish Store Ideas

Heeeeeeeeey! It's been forever since I've been on this forum, I missed you all! How's it going with everyone?

In any event, I had a few general questions for anyone who keeps, buys and sells crayfish:

I'm subletting space from an LFS to breed and sell my crayfish. And while getting everything started I had a few idle thoughts that I'd like opinions and answers to from "general public" lol


1.) P. alleni, C. quad, P. clarkii (and here, in NJ/NY, Marmorkrebs and P. acutus) seem to be fairly staple sights in the LFS scene. What other species would you personally want to see in a LFS for sale on a more regular basis?

(P. alleni are the electric blues and occasionally whites, C. quad is Australian blues/Yabbies and P. clarkii are the dark reds and occasionally oranges)

1a.) Do you think your selections are feasible ideas, or would they be too hard to sell/maintain/etc in an LFS?

2.) Of the species you do buy, do you find the prices too high, too low or reasonable?

2a.) Do you think certain species should be priced differently than they are?

3.) If a LFS offered printed pamphlets that had general care information, and in some instances, species specific care information, do you think this would be a good idea? Or just a waste of ink and paper?

4.) Got any other ideas, comments, etc... feel free to share! I can't wait to get this going and I hope it lasts!

Still breeding apparently. Any new hybrids?

for ur things, crays are a speciallty. i would guess its local based. Here expensive crays move pretty good. by expensive i mean 50(saw a odd one run for 80 bucks and sold, never seen one like it since) bucks a pop. but where u are they might not be as hot.

prices seem to run high for me. i wish they were lower but it sucks here. I mean electric blue p. alleni runs 25 or more apiece. personally, i would love to see more prawns and big crays. the big boys are more interesting to cray noobs, than the little guys that become the big boys

side note, if u get it goin good i got a cray im after but no one can get it for me. If u find a way let me know. cherax setosus

Did they? Seems all the crayfish forums have died down again lately... Everything seems like just running on skeleton crews, meh. Crayfish interest waxes and wanes, they'll be back.

No new hybrids, I sold off most of my stock when I moved. But half my interest in getting this store space is that I'll have a cleaning/care crew and extra tanks to do some of my own breeding without taking up home space, hehe.

Yea, I see some oddballs here come in periodically and even though they range between $60-90, they always go within days of showing up. Even the regular stock like the blue P. alleni sell within a week, habitually at $25-35 (size depending) and the "Radioactive" orange P. clarkii, too. I figure I can keep real oddballs at high, but less insane prices, but lower the regular sellers to more reasonable prices and command more of the market in the area. And still make profit to offset costs.

I mean, there's a fair demand for them here... LFS just don't like bringing them in. They can't set up tanks right to keep them long term and they kill stock continually due to bad housing choices within the stores. So they don't accept order requests and don't stock often. I can fix that in the store I'll be in. In theory, at least.

Cherax setosus... that's one of the variants that's still under genetic discrepancy, right? I'll ask some of my importers if they can get their hands on it, don't know if they can. Aquatic trades to the USA from Australia and Indonesia have halted a bit lately... it's been real slow getting inverts and fish in, on this coast at least.

I Got to tell ya a funny story ... I had a tank set up with some native fish , redtail pickerel, some pumpkinseeds and I went to a creek near by and caught a bunch of crays for their tank , I was thinking I had plenty of rock and caves for them to hide but was hoping that they would breed and keep themselves self sustaining ... Well my first wife had a COW! WTF are those ?? why did you put them in there ?? Taske them out ... Only not so nice words ... We was having trouble anyways , caught her messing around on me so that night I caught her sleep dipped some crays out of the tank and put them in her underwear drawer and I left the lid up on the tank >>>> Had to been there when she woke up !!!! LOL
 
I love big nasty mean crays, glad to have you back! I will always be open to a purchase when you get everything up and going, just let me know if you can ship!
 
Wencome back. :) I'm a relative newbie to the site, but been a cray fan since I was a kid.

1.) I'd like to see some of the more exotic colorful ones from Indonesia more commonly available. Cherax sp. "Hoa Creek", Cherax sp. "Blue Moon", and Cherax sp. "Tiger".

1a.) Care isn't that much different than C. Quad or C. Destructor from what I understand

2.) Most prices are fairly reasonable from what I've seen. Except the crazy people trying to sell Marbled Crays for more than $10 each.

2a.) As above with Marbled Crays, a cray with a simple care sheet that clones itself shouldn't cost much. Something more exotic from Australia or Indonesia can carry a higher price and most people will gladly pay it.

3.) I think it's a good idea to print pamphlets for species specific info. Maybe 1 for general care, and a separate one with extra details for each species you sell.

4.) Just happy to have another Crayniac around. :)

I have a crayfish electric blue in colour that an idea cannot be confirmed, would you have a butchers?
 

this is setosus, also know possibly as rotundus. More known as rotundus. from my understanding they can be exported but no one has gone through the process to get the permission to do it.
there is a rotundus setosus. this is not the same!! the first is more known as rotundus. rotundus setosus is smaller than just rotundus.
 
Oh I would buy some. I have marbles and cobalt blue lobsters. But you have a good idea.
