yea we know that sand works .. we want to know about this colored sand ..
The Crayola sand is coated with Acrylic paint which has formaldehyde as a component. It is also coated with an antifungal deterrent agent. Both agents are not suitable for fish. So, I would say 'No' to Crayola in an aquarium.

I highly doubt that anything meant for toddlers to play with would have formaldehyde in it. :screwy:

I don't know if you have any kids but if not stop by your local park and watch some kids play in a sand box. I would bet with in 10minutes a kid will put something from the box in his/her mouth. Thats what kids do and thats why Crayola wouldn't put formaldehyde in/on sand.

But a little proof of this boisterous claim will change my mind. Have any?

dang when I saw pictures I hoped to see this stuff in a tank only to be disappointed to see regular sand. I have over 100Lb of regular sand in my tanks everyone knows it works. so has anyone got pics of this colored stuff in there tanks. we're still waiting

Yes, I do have two children. Yes, I did research this sand because I thought it may look good in a small tank. N2M,the company that manufactures Crayola sand states that the sand is not animal tested, has an antifungal deterrent and it is colored with a non-toxic acrylic based paint, a paint that has formaldehyde as a component. It's safe for children because its tested with them in mind. Crayola doesn't conduct animal testing. So, who knows how safe it is for fish in the long term.

I have real trouble believing that this product has active formaldehyde in it, since the product is meant for children and formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Formaldehyde may be used as a precursor to some component of the paint, but surely there is not any 'in the sand'. Doesn't make sense anyway, since formaldehyde is a gas at room temperature. In aqueous form, it is called formalin.

Its a cool idea but I wouldnt want purple or blue gravel in my tank...let alone purple or blue sand...colored sand looks like clown puke...now maybe if they had black or another natural color??

I've never heard anything bad from it. I know some people that have used it in their tanks without a problem. If I had an extra tank I would try it for sure.

There site hs a lot of good info, seems safe to me. http://www.coloredsandstore.com/general-faq/

Absolutely no chemicals are used in washing! Sand is washed in extremely hot water. Unlike some sand companies – No anti-fungal materials are placed in the sand. Before bagging – Crayola PlaySand is run through a rare earth magnet to make sure there is no metal in the sand. Then run through a Sweco screen to remove any possible foreign material that may have contaminated the sand during transportation. This is done to ensure a safe contaminant free sand!

before entering our production line. From that point it directly enters the coloring/coating process where it passes through a continuous “tube” of pigment. (If by some chance a fungus or bio-material survived that process it then would immediately enter a dryer that heats the sand to 250 degrees.)

Designed to be submerged 100% in water without color fade or bleed

Our quartz sand resists abrasion better than typical sands. Each grain of sanded has been screened and is completely round – giving it a smooth sugary soft feel
