I'd go with ctenopoma acutirostre for a midlevel fish. Good looking african fish. You could also go with african knives.

We had rainbows in with ours for quite awhile.
If you get large ones they're unlikely to get eaten because they're pretty fast. Honestly a couple of ours did get eaten, but only after we added a 13" ornate that wouldn't eat anything but fish and shrimp into the tank. I think if you have senegals that eat pellets and are well fed + really big rainbows you wouldn't have any problems.
Even if you're not usually into rainbows they add some movement to a tank that might sometimes be pretty inactive when the ropes and senegals are resting. Some of my ropes are usually out and about but I have around 10 of them.

good midwater fish are silver dollars or giant danios. African leaf fish are pretty cool. Maybe an african knife fish. Maybe some angel fish.

i think 2 senegals, a rope or 2 plus some rainbowfish in a 55 would be awesome. Rainbows really add color and movement to tanks and would go good with polys. If u end up with a 100g get more upper jaw polys and a dat or 2(not widebars)
