crazy looking cross bred fish????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It looks like its saposed to be like that
It's not. I'm not guessing. I've kept catfish for years and that is a scarred syno. If the scar is very old, it would look smooth. He might sleep on the heater, or maybe when he was half an inch long something bit him. Just FYI, cichlids and catfish will never hybridize. Their genes are too different. It would be like a human and a lemur getting it on. No babies.

thank you for correcting that point. that was driving me nuts reading it. Yes its definitely a synodontis. whether its a different species or a scar it sounds like someone with syno experience is on it.

Thanks for all the info and help and sorry about my " lack of info on fish breeding " I would hate to drive anyone "NUTS" I just wanted to know what kind of fish this was. I didnt want to upset anyone who is obviossly an expert. Anyways thanks for the info. I just never saw a fish like that before.

Definitely a syno catfish. Probalby Synodontis nigrita (Lace catfish), possibly Synodontis eupterus. Both are fairly common in the hobby, and even found at megamarket chain stores.

Just to offer a theory on how it got there, I've heard that some syno's will deposit their eggs in with the eggs of mouth brooding cichlids. I've never seen it happen, but here is what I've heard: Basically they wait for mouthbrooders to start spawning, then sneak their eggs in the mix. The baby syno's will then eat the cichlid eggs until they are released by the mother cichlid. So basically a cichlid gives "birth" to a catfish.

So my theory, perhaps you bought a cichlid which was being kept in a pet store tank with a syno. At some point while in the pet store, the cichlid attempted to spawn and a syno snuck some eggs in there. Then when you brought the cichlid home, she eventually released a developed syno catfish into your tank.

Looks to me like one lucky Synodontis euptera, who escaped being dinner early in life. He's missing the feathery portion of his dorsal fin, his tail looks like it was split early in life, and that white stripe (not normal) is probably a scar from that attack. He is sporting a cool looking, intense battle scar. You or your brother may have actually bought him and don't even realize its the same fish since their pattern looks very different when they are young, as well as

juvenile:

Always nice to find a random fish in the tank. :)
