crazy p diet question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If memory serves me right, the one in my avatar died in a heater malfunction while I was away.

so should I sell these and get some "fresh" ones then? I really like these guys but I don't want 5-6 in P for the rest of there lives.

Diogenes, Why must we always be butting heads? I'm curious as to what exactly you studied and where? Since you mention human nutrition, I am guessing that these University level, which doesn't mean a whole lot, classes weren't geared toward marine/aquatic life. Since you do have such a high degree of education then please explain how his fish are doing so well, instead of just saying no it's bad to do.

well knox my comments werent really directed so much at you as bruner. I wasn't aware that we were constantly butting heads. I guess I just didn't pay that much attention.

I'm a registered nurse. I'm not claiming to be an ichthyologist or biologist or an expert on P's, but chemistry is chemistry, nutrition is nutrition, and biology is biology. I'm not saying i've done first hand research specifically on aquatic life, but my educational background prepares me well to understand the research that is being done by people who do.

There are variances and exceptions, even in biology. I'm not downing what you do by any means, my fiance is in the process of deciding between rn and surgical nurse. All I'm saying is that if a herpetologist came on here and said no no no jellyfish react like so on a molecular level, I'm gonna tell him to stick to his field of study. Just as I wouldn't presume to tell you or a doctor that the human body reacts a certain way because a fish does. What really irritated me was that you simply wanted to state that it's bad and avoid the actual question of why they are growing so big and colorful on the bad diet. If you had said something along the lines of, eating fast food everyday will make you big too but it's not good for you, then I would have been like oh ok thanks

Dude, I didn't answer your question because I have no idea. There are so many variables in fish growth. Water chemistry, dissolved wastes, current, genes, frequency of water changes, stunting, occult parasitic infections. The list goes on and on.

I know I do a lot of talking around here but I try to keep the topics to something I feel like is relevant and that I have at least a passing competency with. I'm not trying to blow smoke up anybody's GI tract. If I feel like I have something worthwhile to lend to a conversation I will, if I haven't a clue I won't.

Surgical nurses are RN's unless your talking about PA's but that's a whole different program and a masters. There are surgical techs but I believe that's an unlicensed position. I do rehab nursing (disabilities not drugs) at one of US News and World Reports "Top American Hospitals." I understand there's a difference between fish and human A & P but on the cellular level, where most of these reactions are taking place, there's not a whole lot of difference. I don't know about other programs but when I got my degree in nursing I was a few credits short of a double major in biology and i'm still in school working towards a masters. Some people spend their whole nursing school experience changing bed pans. I felt like I spent mine staring through a microscope.

If you think I am seriously antagonizing you at every turn then I apologize. I don't mean to be abrasive.

well there you go, shows I have no clue about the different nursing positions. All I remember was blah blah I either want to be a blah or surgical nurse. I guess I should have been paying attention but in my defense she started talking after I was already staring in the fish tank.

See that list gives me some reasons to go through. For whatever reason you just tend to come across as one of those "holier than thou, my way or you're a dum455" types and it really gets to me, especially at 3am. A & P awesome class btw

So how can I tell by the jawline if thee are stunted. I'd post pics by my camera has gone bye bye and my bberry just doesn't do well with fast moving underwater objects

hehe...of course you a dumb455 if you don't see things my way. ;)

Hey Knox you wouldnt happen to be a Vols fan would you? If so that explains it. I'm a die hard bama fan and crimson and orange don't mix too well.

Love the bluntness and honesty guys. 3 men working things out like gentlemen = )

How annoying it must be to have your friend's Ps outgrow your's on that diet. That would bother me too

a bigger fish doesn't equal a healthy fish.
I'm pretty sure that a child that's on junk food diet will out grow a child that's on a strictly healthy diet. same applies to fish
the question is do you want your fish to be big or to be healthy?

I was thinkin' the same thing - Ham, Bologna,etc.. large amounts of Fats, this could lead to a much shorter life span as Piranha can't breakdown terrestrial meat fats. Thats not saying they can't handle meat from time to time just not exclusively if longevity is your goal. As for the Vitamin B thing - a varied diet is key. P's can eat Goldfish it's just not recommended their entire diet be goldfish. Shrimp contains the same enzyme however the levels aren't as high. The varied diet gives Piranha the vitamins that perhaps just one food source might not contain, the multiple food sources offset each other.

Good post to read about fish diet and nutrition if you're fairly uninformed as myself.

I thought the reason to avoid feeding your fish feeders was to avoid spreading disease, and that feeders were fairly non-nutritional. I wasn't aware of the possibility of feeders stunting a fishes growth.
