location location location. i was talking to a friend from northern ontario she had a 100 gal and she was lookin for a fx5 but the closest she could find was a fluval 406 and out of 3 lfs the cheepest price was $450 lol

Im in ontario and both those filters run closer to $350 here. It wont vary more then a few bucks in the same province as there mostly all change

This is a classic example of a newb buying a tank for its looks an paying for it rather than practicality. To them is nice, different and another piece of furniture. To a hobbyist all you can think is of how big of a regular rectangular tank you could have 100+ for that price.
