well ive posted questions about this before but it still bothers me that my rtc scratches like he has ick it is normally around dusk and he stops if i turn the lights on my, rtc/tsn flashes every now and then but not often water tests great always,i change lots of water,temp 76 the tank is a 300gal w/ a wet/dry filter anyone have any ideas?oh yeah both fish are about 18in,they have no other tankmates

Could just be a stress related issue... Flashing could be a sign of alot of things... it's like someone having hives... could be because of a million and one reasons... need to narrow it down... but if both are doing it ... I'm suspecting that there is something thats causing it... what is the decor of the tank? and what tests are you doing to that are always great?
test include nitrite amonia ph nitrate tds phophates the tank has a few large smooth round rocks large grain rainbow buffed substrate and zoo-med silk plants tank is 300gal w/ a wet/dry temp is 76 and they only do it at dusk i feed cocktail shrimp jumbo prawns cod fillets and during the summer crawfish i run 2 36 watt 10,000k lights and a rio 1700 powerhead to move extra water in the tank and ive checked the water with a "fluke"meter to see if the tank carried any residuled electric charge, it didn't.Thats about all the info i can think of right now.So based on that any ideas?oh yeah 50percent w/c weekly sometimes up to10 days and i feed twice a week
Yeah I'm thinking it's just a habit for them...like their pre-game stretch...LOL Some times they just like to flash...
I used to have Piranahas that would "Flash" sometimes,it used to drive me nuts!!I spoke with Pedro from Aquascape and he told me it is common for them to do it once in a while,so maybe Catfish are the same??
Because the cats are scaleless, I found my RTC doing that for about a week and getting himself a bit banged up. I found that sometimes, doing all the water changes you do, the water is harsh because it is chemically treated by a hydro plant (more info than necessarily needed right now). Basically, use a good dose of slime coat (with aloe) in the tank. Sometimes their skin just gets hyper-sensitive and it needs a bit of soothing.

I would agree to a point about it being an issue with the water... but the strange part is that they are only doing it at lights out... which leads me to beleive that it's habit more than an issue with the water. If the water quality was the issue we would be seeing this action all the time
