Crazy thought about filtration runnng into hydroponic set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
 The wall was my next suggestion.

You didn't video the floor install did you? might have been able to see a clear spot.

Put a valve on the line going into and out of the 55g barrel and use unions to connect it (for removal and cleaning).

Make sure the troughs dump to a pre-filter to catch all the gunk (technical term, look it up :D).

I'll try and reference some tech articles for for you in the next day or so too. Universities are the best for this stuff.

Remeber to photo document it all for us too. Maybe we can get Neo to put in a Aquaculture forum .

It's been done in Amsterdam by Breeder Steve of S.O.L. I read a whole article a long time ago about him doing that...he called it "Guppy-ponics". I always thought that it be cool just to try it, but he had A LOT of fish tanks going...So I imagine it's quite a bit of work. He was very selective about what fish he kept so he could feed a diet beneficial to both the fish and plants.

Thanks for the websites Dr. Joe. Its great to be able to actually see a few set-ups that are running. I only wish I had more room to make a larger set-up. I only have like 15' /15' but if I watch my spac that should be plenty of room. expesially if I keep the 55 gal. barrels up above everything and use gravety, then have the wet/dry filtation under the gutters. I think I have it figuired out for the most part. Im only worried about the lighting. Do you think I would be ale to get by with shop lights with grow bulbs, or would you upgrade to better lights? I have a friend who owns a trout farm. Im going to run my thoughts by him. He doesnt run the water through a hydoponic system. He just pumps the water onto his garden, but he knows alot about commersial filtration, and he might have a few pumps lying around, and a few ideas. What do you think about the lighting? What would you do if you were making this set-up - as far as the lighting goes? I am on a limited budget. Im disabled so I cant afford huge electric bills. But if the floresents wont work. I might not have much of a choice. Thanks for all your valuable thoughts and info............Dave

I think the fluorescents will work fine, hang them from chains so you can start them low with seedlings and raise them accordingly.

Tall plants (like tomatoes) will shade the lower half of the plant if you install them directly over the troughs. I start mine over the trough but move them to the aisle (in between rows) as the plants mature.

Trout farm huh? Nice.
