I've seen this done on this site multiple times where a single arowana is kept with a large amount of small tetra's. I was considering doing this myself as my arowana is soon to be arriving and I would love to see a contrast in size and colour.

Has anyone had any personal experience with combining these fish and any suggestions?

I'm pondering whether to add the arowana or the cardinal tetra's first. At first I thought I should add the tetra's first considering if I later introduced them the arowana would be more settled and eager to take them. On the other hand if I introduced the tetra's first then the arowana might pick them off as it would be too stressed to take food from myself.

Any comments appreciated.

Many thanks.

well i have not done it but i would thinke if you got a big enough arowana the tetreast wont evn phase what i am saying the arowana might get a coupel but the tetras are to small so i would try in with like 5 first

The arowana has to be big enough so it does not waste it's time/energy eating the small fish.

The arowana is 9". How do you think it would react with the cardinals?

If your arowana has lips, it will be licking them. My balck aro at 17-18" would not eat cardinals, but would readily devourer congo tetras.

I think it'll be a few months before you can have tetras, don't feed your aro feeders in the mean time.

Has this really been done successfully before because im having trouble understanding how this will not just end up with a fat aro,is there any other tankmates?

Steve

Yes, my current two 27" silvers and 22" black aro pay no attention to the school of serpae tetras in the tank. I do believe the 14" BGK has a little tetra snack every once in while though.

I will wait a year till I add the shoal then. Are there any shoaling fish you can reccommend with asians? I was considering a motoro ray but this tank will be planted with a carpet of HC so they're out of the question.
