Creating natural, functional cichlid display tanks

Thanks Kittiee. Are there no oak trees your side of the world ?
There is... But they're not native to the island meaning they're all planted beside roads in the city, or in peoples yards. My pop has (what I think are) oak trees in his yard near his back fence, but he got new neighbours a couple of years back who are always spraying god knows what around, so I don't trust pops trees anymore. Sucks because I left it for so long, expecting that they'd always be there and be safe to use. Serves me right for having unrealistic expectations I guess...

That's good to hear. It also makes me feel like the purpose of this thread is working ,so thanks and good luck with the 55.

Hi all, I have used eucalypt branches and roots several times before. I've only ever used pieces that have been dead for some time and are very dry. The timber is quite dense and readily sinks when soaked for a while. I've never had a problem with fish health, but they do produce a lot of tannins. For years.

Very informative info here Stanzzzz7, love the tanks as well.

I would love to be brave enough to go wood collecting, I don’t dare it yet though. Furthest I have ventured yet is rock collecting.

Very nice thread! I have been thinking of trying a leaf litter bottom for a while now, yours are awesome looking.
