Looking for some advice from the pros and more info on the glass filter. I'm trying to put some cash together for some heavy duty filtration to be used for mult tanks. Starting with about 750 gal of tanks, but have about 3x as many tanks and not sure how many will be expanded into the system. Looking for any suggestions , closed system is definatley sounding good but I'm not dead set on it. I was thinking large vat with filter socks }glass or ultima}uv}tanks, may incorperate aquaponics but only for additional filtration. I want this system to be extremely efficient, ans easily serviceable but capable of handeling the bio load from many large well fed cichlids........who will be my Huckleberry ;) my ears to the ground.

LOL!! I'm Your Huckleberry you want want efficient and clean then stay away from sump design with socks Right now i still have both and can tell you with certainty chambers that can be backwashed have a hand up on the competition And the glass filter has another advantage of being of being a mechanicle polisher on top of having Bio!!!!

But is it enough alone, I like "overkill" makes me feel comfortable ( my
155 has 3 fx5 40gal sump and 40watt uv). How can I expand upon the glass filter in a closed system. I was thinking about using a large vat to always have easy access to all tanks from one location, heat all centrally, one drip system, expansion of total volume, water change all at once, easy incorperation of plants.

I was looking at my friends setup in an lfs, he uses 2 750 gal vats were all the tanks dump into through filter socks, then had 2x 10' tall fluidized beds, this was the bulk of his filtration, I bought all the tanks that hooked into this system. He offered me the 2 vats but was using the 10' cylinders for jellyfish tanks in his renovated store.

UV sterilization for tanks and for your fish some say you don't need it until Well you need it !!!!!Big mistake if you value what's in you tank !!!! You can go along months even years possably when something hits your tank that the fish are not used to then you have a problem !!! That's why i use them on my tanks let's hear some other opinions ????
IMO, the ones who said that UV is not needed are the ones who have never had an UV. Also, when invest in an UV, do some research and buy a legit one. There's some aftermarket/knock off brand that doesn't do any good, and may cause harm to the fish. It seems to me that the casing/body was made with material that is degraded when exposed to the UV light and release toxic chemical into the water passing thru it

40-watt on a 155-gal tank. You're quite an overkill guy! If you like vat with filter sock, run it separately with a return pump, and run the Ultima/glass filter with another return pump. You can put your UV in either one of the return line. By separating your Ultima/glass filter from the vat, you can empty your tank fast and conveniently during water change, and backwash the Ultima/glass filter at the same time. Depend on your stocking and feeding schedule, the glass filter same with the one Hulon used or an Ultima 4000 is able to handle about 800-gal freshwater tank base on my personal experience, with water change every 4 days, to maximum of every 7 days

It is more then enough for any fish other then Rays if you have any thoughts of adding rays then you will need more Rays very unique membrane wrapped poo will clog the glass filter unless you backwash very frequently this is not with one ray but 5 to 6 large Adult rays with more poo there is more cleaning .....

Even with multiple large tanks filled with fish, starting out with 480 and 270, but could add up to 3 total of each size. No rays due to width of tanks. Can I use more than one in a chain or do you reccomend just one alone. Thanks for answering all my questions

I am not saying no Rays JUst trying to make sure of your stock Rays are just much more "Dirty " so to speak and in turn need to do more maintenance ..No you cannot hook them up in tandem they make larger models if you are going to have a hefty stock load you may need to move up a size....

mmm at the exhibition last week they have actually made a little unit which works electrically to break down ammonia nitrite and nitrate its like a O3 system in terms of how it works. If these things actually work long term we wont need all these huge bio filters =D.

Its nice seeing all these huge filter systems but honestly are they really doing a better job then a simple sump? most of my tanks are stocked high and I just use sumps the water is always clear.

Are you talking about denitrator? That thing has been around for years. What's the average size of your sumps? I don't know about those huge filter system, but as for me and a few members that I know, those glass/bead filter works for us better than a simple sump

Didn't see this before thanks for the input and volume pointers , useful info.
