I was thinking about getting a few creek chub (or what i believe to be) for my tanks and i was wondering i fanyones kept them before, if their aggressive at all or fin nippers, and if theyll school nicely or just venture on their own.
Creek chub can and will eat smaller fish (up to about half their own size), but are not particularly aggressive towards similar-sized fish. If you have two males and they get into breeding condition you might see some aggression.
I have heared that they can get kinda big but havent ever seen em above three inches i was hoping to keep them in my 75 for a while but a buddy has a farm pond hed be happy to take em when they get bigger
They do get big. Chubs are just a term for big minnows. Most if not all will range from 5-10inches. You live in pa so I assume you will probably see the ones I see SOOO. they WILL get to 10inches. I catch 10inch chubs ALL the time.
I agree with the size estimate from BuildingBlocks. Creek Chub and other similar chub will reach 10" easy, max around a foot. Be sure to properly identify the fish in your area, because not all chubs are the same, and some are threatened. We wouldn't want you gathering up threatened or endangered species.
They`ll be fine in a 75. Just make sure you're collecting creek chub and not fallfish, which get about 2x as large and would need something more long the lines of 125-180g.
ill be sure to ID what i find, but i doubt the ones im after are threatened their absolutly everywhere here.....im originally from ct and baitfish are few and far between there here their all over so id like to take advantage of the smaller minnows, but like i said my friend has a farm pond and hell take em if they get outta controll.....but i doubt theyd make it past the bass
I had a few creek cubs a while back, and they schooled together all the time, they were incredibly active and ate just about anything. I didn't have any issues with fin nipping but could see why it might happen.
