creek chub

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Creek chubs are caught and doing good in 20 gal quarantine......also had a wonderful find of a 2 inch bullhead....not going to be able to house him in the long run but i know people who want him when he gets older.......the chubs school and both chubs and catfish are on flakes already......so far no problems but i think i will treat the tank for parasites just in case

I have kept them a few times(right now actually). My pickerel loves to eat them. They are very greedy feeders and I have had troubles feeding my other fish when I keep chub. They keep a tight school and I have not seen much aggression outside of feeding/hunting. Personally, I think they are just a dirty minnow similar to goldfish, but thats just me. I have seen/caught some over 13" in Baxter

Im positive its a bullhead ive kept madtoms in the past and love them but couldnt pass the lil guy up. Im experimenting with what minnows might look nice in a tank and since creek chub were the most abundant thats the one i decided to start with.....so far im not so impressed but they do school nicely. But then again ive only had them for lil over a day so ill let them settle in before deciding how i feel about them. The bullheads awesome tho hes got a hole right underneath my wisteria and hides till bout 6 then starts on the prowl.....wouldnt even know he was there half the time. If the creek chub are a bust i may move on to killis which i have done before but never in numbers

Thirteen inch chub shenanigans? Sounds like its time for a messelonski (sp?) Trip with that type of bait

Haha, Ill be heading down in a few weeks for a pike trip. i only saw one chub at 13", thought it was a trout at first! most of the others from the lake were under 5". I would suggest looking into some blacknose dace. The males get a spectacular yellow/gold color to their bellies, just like brown trout. They sort of school, or more stay close. Twitchy fish. Staying under 3" generally, they will eventually become food for the cat. I did have some success breeding them too, but failed to raise the fry.

Haha wish i could join ya....a few of the smaller chubs did become food for the bullhead already apparantly flakes and pellets werent enough lol. I only have a couple left still in quarantine not sure theyll make it. If not ill try other minnows as im not as impressed with these guys. Colefishing that looks like musky bait to me:)

These guys kinda remind me of the rosy feeders....
