How can Jeff sell a fish that has an infection?? I thought he was a reputable seller, not one who sells a fish that looks like it is dead becuase it is sick. That bugs me.....

He is one of the best sellers out there and will always give you the straight scoop. Bottom line -if you don't want his fish, don't buy them. :irked:

And now, back to the fish. :)

I bought a manchada from Rapps and had it for almost a year. It was large (about 10") and had a pinkish belly (probably a female) and patches of metallic green. It also looked like someone poured black rubber on parts of it - very cool looking IMHO. I am pretty sure that it's coloration was caused by another organism, but I can't be sure. It is known as an "Army Pike" in Japan and Europe. Probably because of the camouflage pattern.

Because they are rarely collected in the wild, no one has had enough specimens to study and to the best of my knowledge there are no scientific papers on them. But I am sure that there is a facinating story involved and that it will be revealed by someone much smarter than me. :D.

Just to clear things up, it's manchada (not manchata), it means stained or speckled in Spanish. Which makes sense given it's appearance.

Here's a pic of one from Jeff's site (I got one that came in about a year later.)

People are speculating that it is a disease, I'm saying I don't know.

I do think that it is interesting "phenomenon" and I hope that some research is done on them.
